The articles I am going to write about Reign, will be in English, so that more people can look at them and find pieces of information easier. Especially since the series’s costumes I am here describing are from the CW’s hit series Reign with Adelaide Kane, Toby Regbo and Torrance Coombs. I chose this series not because of its accuracy (because let’s face it, nothing is accurate! They even put a bath tub in one episode, and the story is set in the 16th century!) but because of the beauty of its costumes. Even though the cast do not wear period costumes, they work really well as 16th-century inspired costumes. Meredith Markworth-Pollack, the costume designer (she also works on the set of Hart of Dixie and was assistant on Gossip Girl), has done an amazing work in managing to mix period costumes and nowadays uber-classy fashion.
MARY, QUEEN OF SCOTS
I guess I would kick of these articles with Mary’s magnificent Basil Soda Satin Gown with Embroidered Bodice that she was wearing in the first episode. It comes from the Fall 2012 collection and is sadly not available online anymore. The dress was already featured on some of the promotional posters for the series when it wasn’t even out yet on which she is wearing the Deepa Gurnani Diamond Shaped Headband. Here are two dresses that really work as look-a-likes, found on Topshop: a Mesh Bodycon Dress by WYLDR & a Black Sheer Lace Panel Maxi Dress by Rare. There is also this Mila Maxi dress on Monsoon.
The costume department decided to pair the dress with this Gillian Steinhardt Evil Eye Cuff which is 18k gold plating and costs about $350 on her jewelry site here. On Monsoon, a Flower cut out stretch bracelet can be found, which can be a cheaper solution!
With the Basil Soda dress, Mary wears these sold out Lionette by Noa Sade Greenwich Earrings,
Apart from this dress, when she first appears at Henry’s castle, she is wearing a very nice blue dress (I have yet to find if it’s a costume department design), and this, as she always does throughout the series, a marvelous headpiece Paris by Debra Moreland Sweetbriar Headpiece (that costs about $440).
With this headpiece and dress, Mary wears this by Inna Hand Beaded “Arabian Night” Necklace but the it comes from old collection that is now sold out.
And these sublime Lionette by Noa Sade Queens Earrings in amber.
And also this Paris by Debra Moreland Filigree Halo Headpiece ($540).
Then, in one of the outside scenes, she wears these Gillian Steinhardt Viva Earrinas that cost $180 and that are made of Brass with 18k Gold and Silver plating. If you seek trianguar-shaped earrings that would be amazing with a Reign-inspired dresse, here is a pair for £4.99 at New look.
In the first episode Mary also wears this Free People Ana’s Limited Edition Dress (the lighter color isn’t available anymore) ($600). This dress looks almost unrecognisable after Reign’s costume department wittily transformed it. It was dyed, they added sleeves and also embroideries along to bodice. It is also worn with the Gillian Steinhardt signet ring (about which I’m going to tell you about when I get on to the next episodes) and a Paris by Debra Moreland headpiece. If you’re dreaming of a long lace dress, here are two beautiful ones on ebay: here and here.
Mary also wears this Gypsy Junkies Pearl Leather Headpiece (which costs about $76) with the Gillian Steinhardt custom necklace below. (FYI: the headpiece was also worn by Mary in Chill in the Air and for King and country, when Catherine departs, with an Alexander McQueen dress)
Here is the gold and rhodium-plated necklace with detailing inspired by "Van Halen" collection necklaces (as you can see in the picture above). It was custom made by jewelry designer Gillian Steinhardt, of whom pieces were already used during the show. I was able to find a Foxglove Chain Link Statement Necklace, that would work well as a mock-up for Mary’s Steinhardt necklace. It costs £25 and can be found on Accessorize, Monsoon.
Perhaps the most talked about outfit from the pilot is Mary’s embroidered corset and long flowy skirt from LA based brand of bridal wear, Les Habitudes. Unfortunately, Les Habitudes designs aren’t available online. It is worn with Paris by Debra Moreland headpiece, Gillian Steinhardt Viva Earrings and signet ring.
MARY’S LADIES IN WAITING
In the first episode, when Mary and her ladies arrive at the castle and discover court life for the first time, Kenna wears this Anthropologie Crossed Beads Belt. If you were searching for it, it can be found on ebay here.
She also wears this Vanessa Mooney Cage Headpiece in copper. Sadly it is now sold out. But if you feel like a Reign-inspired headband, there is the sparkle stone headband at Topshop, that costs £12.50!
In the first episode’s ball scene Lola wears this Paris by Debra Moreland Jazz Age Halo Headpiece ($360).
